Shopware 5 end of life: risks and migration planning
Shopware 5 support has ended. Explore security and compatibility risks, extended coverage options, and how to plan a safe, successful migration to Shopware 6.

Shopware's standard development and security support for Shopware 5 ended on 31 July 2024. Your store may still operate, but it is outside the official maintenance lifecycle. Postponing a Shopware upgrade can save money today, but it may increase security, operational and commercial risk.
Paid extended coverage is available through safefive, an independent Shopware extension partner. Its service advertises security monitoring, security patches and compatibility updates for supported Shopware 5 versions. This can buy time for a controlled migration. It is not the same as full platform modernization and does not guarantee continued support for every plugin, integration or external service. (store.shopware.com)
Support arrangements last verified: 30 September 2026.
The risks of staying on Shopware 5
The urgency depends on your technical estate. Risk is higher when a store has unsupported plugins, extensive custom code, older infrastructure or business-critical integrations.
Security remains a central concern. Without suitable extended coverage, newly discovered vulnerabilities may not receive patches. Even with coverage, you must monitor themes, extensions, hosting and connected services separately.
Compatibility can also deteriorate. PHP and database versions change. Payment providers and ERP vendors update their APIs. An essential extension may stop receiving updates or fail after an external service changes. Temporary workarounds then increase maintenance costs and dependence on legacy specialists.
There is also a strategic cost. Budgets spent preserving old technology cannot fund conversion improvements, automation or customer experience. This is how the cost of delay makes software projects more expensive.
A Shopware upgrade is a migration
"Shopware upgrade" is a common search term, but moving from Shopware 5 to Shopware 6 is a replatforming project.
Shopware's Migration Assistant can transfer supported core data. Actual coverage depends on the source version, target version and data structure. Custom tables and plugin data may need separate transformations. Shopware also recommends comparing functions and records after migration rather than assuming a successful transfer means complete fidelity. (docs.shopware.com)
Shopware 5 themes cannot be installed directly on Shopware 6. The storefront normally needs rebuilding, although visual assets and design requirements can be reused. Shopping Worlds must be recreated as Shopping Experiences. Shipping and payment methods need prior configuration and mapping. Custom promotions, product streams and plugin behaviour require individual assessment. (docs.shopware.com)
A safe migration plan should cover:
- plugin, customization and integration audits
- trial migrations plus record-count and value reconciliation
- customer accounts, passwords and historical order testing
- taxes, prices, promotions, payments and fulfilment
- search, feeds, scheduled jobs and transactional documents
- consent, privacy and analytics configuration
- performance testing, monitoring and launch support
- rollback criteria with a named decision owner
SEO work must go beyond redirects. Benchmark the existing site with a crawl. Then validate canonicals, metadata, structured data, internal links, faceted navigation, robots rules and XML sitemaps before and after launch.

How urgent is your migration?
Act immediately if you have an unpatched vulnerability, unsupported payment plugin or failing integration.
Plan a near-term migration if maintenance costs are rising or your roadmap is blocked by legacy constraints.
Use extended coverage as a bridge if migration cannot be completed safely yet. Reduce unnecessary plugins and document every critical dependency during that period.
Project scope usually depends on plugin complexity, catalogue and order volume, custom business rules, ERP or PIM integrations, markets, sales channels and regulatory requirements.
How Webalize can help
Webalize can assess three realistic options: Shopware 6 with its standard storefront, Shopware 6 with a headless storefront or another commerce platform. Our ecommerce development team handles data migration, custom development, integrations and Next.js storefronts.
MyBasic shows our experience replatforming a 14,000-SKU store from PrestaShop to headless Shopware 6 while retaining URLs, accounts and order history. DMX System demonstrates a new Shopware 6 and Next.js build with complex search, trade features and multi-storefront foundations.
Shopware 5 end of life does not mean your store will stop tomorrow. It means risk generally rises as dependencies diverge. The exact urgency depends on your security coverage and technical estate. Plan the migration before an incident removes your control over the schedule.
